Have you lost or forgot your windows password? well, If not you, then I have. So, I’ve decided to share with you in this post some of the methods that I used to recover/reset the lost/forgot Windows password.
How To Recover/Reset Lost/Forgot Windows Password
There are many methods to recover/reset the lost/forgot Windows password. I’ll be sharing all the methods that have proven to be helpful.
For Windows 8, 7, Vista, XP, 2008, 2003, 2000 and NT Users
This is the easiest method and can be used on a wide range of windows operating systems. Follow the steps mentioned below to recover/reset the lost/forgot Windows password.
Step 1: Download the windows password rescuer software on any other computer that you can access.
Step 2: Plug in a storage device like a USB or a CD or a DVD and select burn to USB option.
Step 3: Select the driver and click on the burn option.
Step 4: Now let the burning complete
Step 5: After successfully burning the USB, pull it out safely and plug it into the locked computer.
Step 6: Boot the computer using the USB by entering the BIOS setup.
Step 7: Follow the instructions and fill the details appropriately until you reach the reset password screen.
Step 8: Now, click on the user account that is locked and select reset password.
Step 9: Click yes when the popup appears.
Step 10: Now your password has been removed. Click the reboot button and remove the USB.
Step 11: You can now log into your account without a password.
For Windows 7 Users
Windows 7 Users can follow the steps mentioned below to Recover/Reset Lost/Forgot Windows Password.
Step 1: Find a Windows 7 System Repair Disc. If you do not have one, borrow it from someone having the same bit (i.e. 32-bit or 64-bit) computer or laptop.
Step 2: Now insert the disc and boot from it.
Step 3: Do as instructed by the computer until you reach the <strong>System recovery Options</strong> window
Step 4: Note Down the Location of the Operating System.
Step 5: Hit on next and click on command prompt
Step 6: Once the command prompt window opens up, type the following code except for the first line as it is. Replace the x: with the location, you copied in step 4.
ren utilman.exe utilhold.exe
copy cmd.exe utilman.exe
Step 7: Remove the disk and restart the system.
Step 8: When you reach the login screen, you’ll be asked to fill in the password.
Step 9: In the bottom left of the screen, click on the Icon.
Step 10: A command prompt pops up. In this type net user Username newpassword
Step 11: Replace the username in the above command with your username and the newpassword with the password that you want.
Step 12: Now close the command window and type in your new password to enter windows.
Method 2: With Admin Account
If you are not the admin and you have lost/forgot your windows password, then this step will be helpful to you.
Step 1: Login to the admin account
Step 2: Click on Start>>Control Panel
Step 3: Now select user account and family safety
Step 4: Now go to User Accounts
Step 5: Click on Add or Remove User Accounts
Step 6: Now select the account for which you’d like to change the password
Step 7: Now click on either change the password or remove the password, depending on what you want.
Step 8: If you have selected change the password, enter a new password and save.
Step 9: If you have selected remove the password then just save and leave.
Method 3: Using Ophcrack
Ophcrack live cd is a free password cracker that can be used for most of the windows versions. This can crack passwords in other languages as well but you need to have the XP tables for that language.
Note: You will need hashes to be created using tools like pwdump or fgdump.
Step 1: Download the Ophcrack live cd on a storage device like USB or CD
Step 2: Now connect the device to the computer or laptop and boot the system
Step 3: Now, set the number of threads according to the threads the device has and the number of cores according to the cores the device has but add 1 to it. Example, if you have 2 cores then put the value as 2+1=3 and if you have 2 quad cores then put the value as 4+1=5.
Step 4: Load the hashes using the load button from the computer running ophcrack or any remote computer.
Step 5: Install, enable and sort wisely the rainbow tables you want to keep
Step 6: Click the crack button to start the cracking process.
For Windows 10 Users
Windows 10 Users can follow the steps mentioned below to Recover/Reset Lost/Forgot Windows Password
Step 1: Use a different computer or mobile and go to login.live.com
Step 2: Enter your email ID or phone number and hit enter.
Step 3: Now select Forgot my password
Step 4: Select the I forgot my password option
Step 5: Next enter your Microsoft account.
Step 6: Prove that you are human and your Identity.
Step 7: Follow the instructions and set your new password.
Step 8: Now try logging into your device using your new password
Note: If you have used another Email Id instead of Microsoft’s email ID then this method won’t work for you. You will have to go through other processes in order to recover/reset the password.
You can use other tools also like The Offline NT Password & Registry Editor, The Emergency boot CD, Cain and Abel, Brutus, RainbowCrack, John the Ripper, L0phtCrack which are specifically made to solve this problem.
